Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), in partnership with Chinese contractor Sinohydro, which is constructing the Kishapu Solar Power Project, has handed over 10,000 tree seedlings to residents of Ngunga Village in Kishapu District, Shinyanga Region.
The initiative forms part of efforts to restore the biodiversity of the area affected by the solar power project.
Speaking during the handover ceremony on December 18, 2025, TANESCO’s Generation Projects Manager, Eng. Abdallah Chikoyo, said the exercise is part of the project’s social and environmental responsibility commitments.
Eng. Chikoyo noted that the Kishapu Solar Power Project is expected to generate a total of 50 megawatts in its first phase, which will enhance electricity availability in Shinyanga Region and neighboring areas.
He added that the project’s implementation has so far reached more than 84 percent. “On behalf of TANESCO’s Managing Director, I am handing over 10,000 tree seedlings, of which 9,000 are for shade and timber, and 1,000 are fruit trees.
The aim is to restore Ngunga Village to its original environmental state, and we emphasize that these seedlings must be properly cared for and protected,” Eng. Chikoyo said.
Meanwhile, Sinohydro’s Public Relations Officer thanked the residents of Ngunga Village for their patience during the project’s implementation and encouraged them to actively participate in planting and maintaining the trees for the current and future benefit of the community and Kishapu District as a whole.
Ngunga Village Chairman, Mussa Mamesa, praised TANESCO for collaborating with various stakeholders in the initiative and, on behalf of the villagers, pledged to nurture the seedlings so they contribute positively to the environment as intended.make it pro for citizen
