Restoration of TRA services signals recovery after election disruptions

Services at the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) have been fully restored in all offices nationwide that were affected during the October 29, 2025, general elections, marking an important step toward stabilizing both economic and social activities.

TRA Commissioner General Yusuph Juma Mwenda confirmed the resumption of operations during a visit to the newly established Buguruni offices in Vingunguti, Dar es Salaam, on December 3, 2025.

The temporary disruption of TRA services had significant ripple effects, slowing business operations and creating challenges for taxpayers who rely on timely access to tax services.

Mwenda acknowledged these challenges and offered apologies to those affected, while explaining that rapid measures were implemented to restore services in all seven affected offices.

“Following the damage to the original offices, immediate action was taken to ensure that services resumed without prolonged interruption. Today, all offices are fully operational, providing services as normal,” said Mwenda.

Beyond operational restoration, Commissioner Mwenda stressed the importance of digital systems in safeguarding taxpayer information.

With data stored offsite, TRA’s digital infrastructure not only secured sensitive information but also minimized service interruptions, ensuring continuity despite physical office damage.

“All taxpayer information remains completely secure. Thanks to President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s support for robust digital systems, our work has been greatly streamlined, and information is protected,” he noted.

Taxpayers visiting the Buguruni offices welcomed the resumption of services, citing the visit of the Commissioner General as a motivating factor for voluntary compliance. “Seeing the Commissioner personally engage with taxpayers strengthens our confidence in TRA and encourages us to fulfill our obligations willingly,” said Omar Abdubari, one of the visitors.

The rapid recovery of TRA services demonstrates the critical role of resilient administrative systems in sustaining economic activity.

Disruptions in tax collection can have far-reaching consequences, affecting government revenue, public services, and investor confidence.

The combination of digital infrastructure and proactive leadership in TRA mitigated these risks, allowing Tanzania’s tax system to rebound quickly and efficiently.

The Buguruni visit also allowed Commissioner Mwenda to interact directly with staff and taxpayers, reinforcing service delivery standards and ensuring that lessons from the disruptions are integrated into future contingency planning.
