Kasulu Prison in Kigoma Region is set to receive a modern alternative charcoal production machine from the Rural Energy Agency (REA), a move designed to enhance the institution’s capacity to generate clean and safe cooking energy.

The initiative is part of the Government’s ongoing efforts to promote the use of clean energy in public institutions and replace outdated and unsafe energy methods.

During a visit to the prison, the Director of Clean Cooking Energy from the Ministry of Energy, Mr. Nolasco Mlay, highlighted the Government’s commitment to supporting institutions across the country in adopting environmentally friendly energy solutions.

He noted that the new technology will make energy production more efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable.

“The provision of this machine will reduce the challenges of sourcing alternative charcoal from distant areas, lower operational costs, and ensure a reliable supply of clean energy using easily available raw materials,” Mr. Mlay said.

The Officer in Charge of Kasulu Prison, Mr. Vitalis Mkali, welcomed the support, saying the machine will help the prison produce sufficient alternative charcoal, phase out inefficient production methods, and cut costs previously incurred in purchasing energy.

“This initiative will improve the use of clean cooking energy within the prison, protect the environment, and safeguard the health of users,” he said.

The Director’s visit to Kasulu and other prisons aligns with a Government directive requiring all institutions serving more than 100 people to adopt clean cooking energy.

This measure aims to curb deforestation, protect the environment, and improve social welfare while ensuring sustainable energy use across public institutions.
