Prime Minister urges Tanzanians to preserve food amid delayed rains

Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba has urged Tanzanians to safeguard their food reserves and exercise prudent consumption following warnings of delayed rainfall in several regions.

Speaking on Sunday at his Mlimwa office in Dodoma during a meeting with Regional and District Commissioners from Dodoma and Singida, Dr. Nchemba emphasized the need for proper food management and the use of agricultural inputs adapted to the prevailing climatic conditions.

“The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) has issued forecasts for the Vuli and Masika seasons, covering October–December 2025 and November 2025–April 2026. Some regions are likely to experience below-average to average rainfall, prolonged dry spells, and uneven distribution of rains,” he said.

The Prime Minister noted that delayed rains are expected in Dodoma, Katavi, Kigoma, Singida, Tabora, Iringa, Mbeya, Mtwara, Njombe, Songwe, Rukwa, Ruvuma, and southern Morogoro.

“While there is currently no risk of food shortages due to national reserves, it is vital for households to use food wisely. We have enough stock, but I urge citizens to preserve it and avoid unnecessary consumption,” Dr. Nchemba stressed.

He also advised farmers to prepare their fields on time, use inputs suitable for limited rainfall, and follow guidance from agricultural experts who are traveling across the country to provide advice and training.

Livestock keepers were encouraged to plan carefully for water and feed management to reduce the impact of the dry season.

Dr. Nchemba directed Regional and District Commissioners to ensure agricultural extension officers actively engage with farmers, providing guidance on seed use and other practices tailored to weather conditions rather than remaining office-bound.

He further urged authorities to register farmers in the national database and provide them with registration numbers.

The Prime Minister also called on the Tanzania Ports Authority, Tanzania Revenue Authority, and Tanzania Fertilizer Company to ensure timely handling and distribution of agricultural inputs to farmers.
