The Zanzibar High Court in Pemba is set to hear a high-profile case today involving the Zanzibar Electoral Commission and the Attorney General over alleged violations of election laws and misuse of state power during the 2025 General Election.
The case was filed by eight former ACT Wazalendo candidates for the Zanzibar House of Representatives. The hearing is scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m.
The complainants come from Konde, Micheweni, Kojani, Chakechake, Wawi, Mkoani, Chonga, and Kiwani constituencies. They say they have turned to the courts after feeling denied justice in the election process.
“We decided to go to court because of serious mismanagement and injustice. We can clearly say the election was not fair,” one of the complainants said.
The candidates claim that in some areas, ballot boxes were taken away without being counted, while ACT Wazalendo agents were placed under tight security during the counting process. They argue that these actions undermined the principles of a free and fair election.
The case is expected to draw close attention, as it could have significant implications for Zanzibar’s electoral process.
