Tanzania has taken a significant step forward in strengthening its disaster response capabilities with the approval of a robust set of guidelines for disaster management.
The National Disaster Management Committee, chaired by Dr. Jim Yonazi, Permanent Secretary, Prime Minister's Office, Policy, Parliament, Coordination, and Persons with Disabilities, met on December 19, 2025, at the Prime Minister's Office in Dodoma, to review and approve the National Emergency Plan for responding to drought, floods, and other related disasters for the period November 2025 to June 2026.
The plan outlines strategies for mitigating the impact of disasters, including early warning systems, emergency response, and recovery efforts.
Key guidelines approved include the establishment and operation of Emergency Operations and Communication Centers, National and Regional Disaster Response Teams, and Preparation of Regional Disaster Preparedness and Response Plans.
The committee also endorsed the Implementation Strategy for Early Warning Services for All (2026-2030), aiming to enhance early warning systems, improve disaster risk awareness, and promote a culture of preparedness among communities.
Dr. Yonazi praised institutions and sectors responding to disasters for their efforts in providing disaster education in Tanzania and neighboring countries, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and coordination in addressing disaster risks.
The approved guidelines and strategies will be implemented across various sectors to enhance disaster response and management in Tanzania.
