The Deputy Attorney General, Samwel M. Maneno, representing the Attorney General, Hamza S. Johari, has underscored the important role lawyers play in resolving legal challenges across Tanzania.

His remarks were delivered during the 73rd ceremony for the admission and recognition of new independent lawyers, held on December 5, 2025, in Dodoma.

Speaking at the event,  Maneno emphasized that newly admitted lawyers have a significant responsibility in supporting the justice system.

“I want to take this opportunity to remind the newly admitted lawyers that you hold an important position in ensuring that legal matters are handled efficiently and fairly,” he said.

He highlighted the critical role of lawyers as a link between the judiciary and the public, interpreting and applying the law to ensure justice is delivered effectively.

“You play an essential role in assisting the courts to administer justice, ensuring that legal processes are conducted fairly and efficiently,”  Maneno added.

The Deputy Attorney General also noted the Office of the Attorney General’s continued efforts to support government institutions and legal aid services nationwide, including the establishment of regional and district Legal Advisory Committees and legal aid clinics.

“I encourage all lawyers, including those admitted today, to actively participate in initiatives such as Law Week and other legal education and outreach programs,” he said.

Hon. Maneno also reminded lawyers to maintain discipline and uphold the professional Code of Ethics, noting that the Attorney General oversees the conduct of independent lawyers under the Lawyers Act, Chapter 341.

Chief Justice of Tanzania, Hon. Justice George M. Masaju, addressed the ceremony, urging new lawyers to perform their duties with integrity, in accordance with the Constitution and laws of Tanzania.

“When carrying out your responsibilities, always prioritize honesty, fairness, and adherence to the law. Your work strengthens the justice system and ensures trust in legal processes,” said the Chief Justice.

He emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and contributing to the stability and effectiveness of the justice system.

The 73rd admission ceremony officially recognized a total of 774 graduates as independent lawyers, ready to serve the legal profession and support the justice system nationwide.
