Government, MPs push for sustainable financing to curb antimicrobial resistance

The Government and Members of Parliament advocating stronger action against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) have agreed to establish a sustainable financing mechanism to bolster interventions aimed at combating drug-resistant infections in Tanzania.

The commitment was made on December 2, 2025, during a high-level consultative session held ahead of the official opening of the Africa Regional AMR Stakeholders’ Meeting taking place in Dar es Salaam. The discussion was chaired by the Government Chief Pharmacist, Mr. Daudi Masasi.

Participants underscored persistent funding challenges that continue to undermine AMR programmes particularly in research, laboratory surveillance, public awareness, antimicrobial stewardship and monitoring of resistant pathogens.

Mr. Masasi warned that the fight against AMR cannot succeed without reliable, long-term investment.

“Our progress depends on a strong and predictable financing system that can support AMR interventions consistently and on time,” he said.

To address the gaps, the meeting resolved to convene a national Parliamentary Dialogue on AMR Financing, bringing together lawmakers, health experts, the private sector and development partners to explore durable resource-mobilisation options.

Stakeholders stressed that investment in AMR is essential for protecting public health, reducing national healthcare cost burdens, supporting productivity and safeguarding gains made in the health sector.

The session signalled a renewed commitment between the Government and Parliament to strengthen the national response to antimicrobial resistance.

The Secretary of the MPs’ AMR platform, Christina Mzava, said she was encouraged by legislators’ growing resolve to prioritise AMR in national policy debates and budget cycles.

“There is clear political will from MPs to ensure AMR remains a priority agenda. This marks an important step towards securing sustainable solutions,” she said.
