The Government of Tanzania, through the Ministry of Health, is intensifying efforts to tackle health emergencies by working closely with sectoral ministries and key partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO).

Speaking in Dodoma today, October 16, 2025, during the launch of a three-day training for Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs), Chief Government Physician Dr. Grace Magembe emphasized the importance of collaboration in emergency preparedness.

“WHO has been a key partner in responding to health emergencies, and together we have made significant progress. It is vital to continue strengthening joint efforts, especially in light of climate change, disease outbreaks, and accidents,” said Dr. Magembe.

She highlighted that the One Health Desk has played a critical role in improving coordination and efficiency in responding to outbreak-prone diseases.

“Our colleagues from the Fire and Rescue Force and the Police Force work closely with us. When we talk about emergencies, we refer to various situations, including outbreaks and accidents. Unity and effective coordination are therefore essential,” she added.

Dr. Jerry Jonas, a Public Health Expert from WHO’s Africa Regional Office, praised Tanzania’s proactive approach and said the training will significantly enhance the country’s preparedness for health crises.

Meanwhile, Dr. Makame Khatib Makame, Director of the Disaster Management Commission, Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, said the initiative is crucial for strengthening emergency response teams across the country.

“We commend the Ministry of Health for mobilizing resources to organize this training, which enhances our capacity to conduct effective rescue and response operations during emergencies,” he said.

The training brings together medical teams from across the country, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to respond rapidly and efficiently to emergencies, ensuring the safety and health of Tanzanians.
