Mbeya City Council has elected its new leadership, with Isanga Ward Councillor Dour Issah Mohamed winning the mayoral seat in a decisive victory that signals strong confidence from fellow councillors.

Mohamed secured 48 out of 49 votes, representing 98 percent of all ballots cast. Iziwa Ward Councillor Kefas Mwasote won the position of Deputy Mayor unopposed, earning a unanimous 49 votes, a full 100 percent endorsement.

After being declared winner on December 5, 2025, Mayor Mohamed pledged to lead with unity, transparency, and respect, stressing that the city’s development agenda must remain above political differences.

“This is the moment to work together with love and respect,” he said. “I am not perfect, but I am fully committed. My doors remain open both at home and in the office. I will not tolerate divisive politics or gossip. Our focus is service to the people of Mbeya.”

Mayor Mohamed added that upcoming council committees will be temporary and should serve all residents equitably.

He urged appointees to work with integrity, noting that Mbeya City should aspire to become a national example of disciplined and accountable local governance.

Mbeya District Administrative Secretary Mohamed Fakii reminded both councillors and technical staff of their responsibility to uphold ethical leadership and respond promptly to citizens’ concerns.

He called on them to safeguard council revenues and ensure that their work aligns with directives from the President’s national address.

“Let us prioritize the broader interests of the public, especially young people,” Fakii said. “Mbeya remains safe and stable, and every resident with a concern should feel free to present it through the proper channels.”

In his remarks of appreciation, Deputy Mayor Kefas Mwasote thanked the council for the trust placed in him and vowed to cooperate fully with Mayor Mohamed, the council’s technical team, and all councillors to advance the city’s development goals.

The new leadership now steps into office with an overwhelming mandate and heightened expectations from the people of Mbeya for effective, inclusive, and accountable governance.
