Corruption undermines justice system threatening fairness and public trust

Corruption continues to pose a serious threat to Tanzania’s justice delivery system, undermining fairness, accountability, and good governance, officials have warned.

Assistant Commissioner Terrence Ngole, who oversees Tanzanian participation in the mining sector and corporate accountability, issued the warning on December 23, 2025, while representing the Ministry of Minerals’ Permanent Secretary at a high-level training session for the ministry’s management.

The training focused on the detrimental effects of corruption and strategies to strengthen justice systems within public institutions.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Ngole said corruption severely disrupts government operations, particularly in sensitive sectors such as justice delivery, where bribery fosters inequality, favoritism, and declining public confidence in state institutions.

“Corruption is the greatest enemy of justice. When it penetrates the justice system, it buys fairness, bends laws, and erodes citizens’ trust in institutions meant to protect them,” Ngole said.

He emphasized that the mining sector, like other key sectors, demands the highest integrity from staff to ensure national resources benefit Tanzanians fairly and transparently, free from corrupt practices.

During the session, ministry officials were also briefed on public service ethics, including compliance with laws, regulations, workplace guidelines, and the critical roles of transparency, accountability, and honesty in daily operations.

Assistant Director of Administration and Human Resources, Fatma Senkoro, noted that the training is part of the government’s wider efforts to strengthen ethics, fight corruption, and ensure public servants deliver their duties in line with justice and national interests.

The initiative is expected to equip ministry leaders with a deeper understanding of corruption’s consequences and inspire positive reforms in public service, particularly in managing Tanzania’s mining resources for the benefit of all citizens.
