The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works, Ambassador Engineer Aisha Amour, has instructed the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) to temporarily open all intersection roads in areas under the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project to reduce traffic congestion during construction.
Speaking after inspecting the BRT project, Ambassador Amour said the move is aimed at easing traffic ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays, a period that usually sees increased vehicles and commuters in the city.
“We have identified a quick way to reduce congestion during this peak period by opening intersection roads while permanent construction continues, including the BRT sections,” she said.
She directed all contractors to ensure that detour roads are accessible and in good condition. The contractor handling the Mwenge–Tegeta road section has promised to lay temporary asphalt on detour roads to improve transport and commuting.
To minimize disruption, TANROADS will provide regular updates on alternative routes, helping road users plan their daily movements. Ambassador Amour also urged citizens to follow road safety rules and observe temporary traffic signs.
TANROADS Dar es Salaam Regional Manager, Engineer Alinanuswe Kyamba, said the agency has already begun implementing the Permanent Secretary’s instructions and has asked some contractors to start opening the roads.
