Communities urged to involve Children in forest conservation

Communities living near forest reserves have been urged to actively involve children in forest conservation and raise them with strong moral values to nurture a generation that understands the importance of protecting the nation’s natural resources.

The call came on December 4, 2025, from Senior Forest Ranger Glory Kasmir during the graduation ceremony of Early Childhood and Standard Seven pupils at St. Monica Pre and Primary School in Madaba District.

Speaking at the event, Kasmir stressed that early education and proper upbringing about the value of forests are key to building a nation of environmentally conscious citizens.

“Despite government efforts through the Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS), there is still an increase in activities that threaten children’s welfare and the health of our forests. This calls for joint action from all stakeholders,” she said.

She emphasized that children must grow up understanding the value of forests. “This will not only protect our natural resources but also instill positive behaviors that safeguard the environment for future generations,” Kasmir added.

Kasmir noted that communities near forest reserves carry the primary responsibility to manage these areas properly, as environmental degradation directly affects their access to water, clean air, and ecological stability.

She concluded by highlighting that conservation cannot be left to TFS alone; it requires the combined efforts of parents, teachers, community leaders, and children to ensure forests remain protected for the nation’s benefit.
