Hamza Saidi Johari, one of Tanzania’s most experienced legal minds, has been reappointed as Attorney General, a move widely welcomed by the country’s Public Bar Association (PBA).

The reappointment recognises Mr. Johari’s decades-long contribution to public service, particularly in aviation, maritime law, contracts, and international negotiations.

It also reflects the confidence in his integrity and professionalism, in line with Article 59 of the Constitution, which requires the Attorney General to have at least 15 years of legal practice.

A graduate of Kiev University in Ukraine with a Master’s in International Law, Mr. Johari also holds leadership and management training from India.

Over his 20-year career, he has served as Director General of the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority, chaired key regional and international committees, and taught at the University of Dar es Salaam, Mzumbe University, and Alexandria University in Egypt.

Beyond his academic and administrative achievements, Mr. Johari has played a pivotal role in negotiating major international contracts, including projects with DP World in the UAE and Adani Port in India.

He has also served on national teams resolving border disputes and strategic development projects, cementing his reputation as a trusted legal advisor to the government.

Born in Nalingu Ward, Ziwani Division, Mtwara Rural District, and a proud member of the Makonde community, Mr. Johari is praised not only for his expertise but also for mentoring young government lawyers and promoting good governance.

In a statement, PBA hailed his reappointment as recognition of his leadership, patriotism, and dedication to strengthening Tanzania’s legal framework, wishing him continued success in advancing the rule of law in the country.
