Tanzanians reap rewards from mining as jobs and local businesses thrive

By The Respondents Reporter

The country’s mining sector is becoming a real engine of opportunity for Tanzanians, with local employment soaring and communities benefiting from stronger participation in the industry.

Speaking in Dodoma at a training session for regional coordinators on Local Content and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Minerals Commission Executive Secretary, Engineer Ramadhani Lwamo, stressed that educating citizens is key to turning mining resources into tangible livelihoods.

“Mining is not just about extracting minerals. It is about empowering Tanzanians to earn, run businesses, and build communities,” he said.

“When citizens understand their opportunities, they can fully participate and benefit from this sector.”he added

Engineer Lwamo urged coordinators to serve as strong links between TUME headquarters and regional offices, ensuring that the rules on Tanzanian participation and CSR are fully implemented.

He highlighted that the Commission has published a list of products and services that must be sourced from 100% Tanzanian-owned companies, creating more avenues for local businesses.

Acting Director of Minerals Audit and Trade, Annasia Kwayu, said the sector has created 19,874 jobs, with Tanzanians filling 97.5% of them. Only 2.5% of positions are held by foreigners.

She added that mining companies spent USD 2.03 billion on goods and services in 2024, with Tanzanian businesses providing USD 1.79 billion about 88% of total procurement.

“These figures show that local businesses are increasingly thriving alongside mining operations,” Kwayu said.

With growing employment, business opportunities, and CSR programs improving community infrastructure, Tanzanians are now seeing firsthand the benefits of their country’s mineral wealth. TUME’s continued focus on education and oversight ensures that the sector remains a pathway for sustainable economic empowerment for citizens across the country.
