President Samia Suluhu Hassan has established a commission to investigate the violent incidents that erupted before and after the October 29, 2025, general elections.
According to the statememt releases today that signed by Chief Secretary Dr Moses Kusiluka the commission is led by Mohamed Chande Othman (Chairperson) - A renowned Tanzanian lawyer and former Chief Justice of Tanzania, known for his expertise in constitutional law and human rights.
On the list including Prof. Ibrahim Hamis Juma (Member) - A distinguished scholar and expert in political science, with extensive experience in governance and conflict resolution, Ombeni Yohana Sefue (Member) - A seasoned diplomat and politician, with a strong background in international relations and conflict management.
Others on the list including Radhia Msuya (Member) - A prominent women's rights activist and lawyer, recognized for her tireless advocacy for gender equality and social justice, Paul Meela (Member) - A decorated military officer with a distinguished career, bringing expertise in security and crisis management, David Kapya (Member) - An experienced human rights advocate and lawyer, known for his dedication to promoting justice and accountability as well as Stergomena Lawrence Tax (Member) - A respected politician and former SADC Secretary General, with a strong track record of promoting good governance and social development.
"The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Honourable Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has been pleased to appoint a Commission to investigate the unfortunate incidents of violence that occurred during and after the General Election held on 29th October 2025. This Commission, chaired by Mr. Mohamed Chande Othman," says Dr. Moses Kusiluka, Chief Secretary in a statement.
Commission's Mandate:
The commision is set to investigate the root causes of violence during and after the elections as well as identify those responsible and recommend appropriate action in promoting peace, stability, and national cohesion.
However, he move follows concerns over clashes and disturbances reported in various parts of the country. The international community, including the African Union and the United Nations, has called for a thorough and impartial investigation.
The African Union has expressed concern and urged calm and restraint while the United Nations has emphasized the need for a transparent, impartial, and accountable.
