The National Environment Management Council (NEMC) has transformed this year’s SHIMMUTA Games into more than just a sporting contest, using the platform to intensify national conversations on climate change, safe mercury management and environmental stewardship.
While NEMC’s football team registered an impressive 5–0 win against the Workers Compensation Fund (WCF) on November 27, 2025, at Highland Stadium in Morogoro, officials say the real victory lies in how sports can mobilize public awareness.
NEMC’s campaign is powered by the Adaptation Fund and the EHPMP projects, which have supported uniforms and equipment branded with key messages on climate resilience and responsible mercury handling.
As a result, every appearance on the field doubles as a public education effort reaching workers, families and local communities attending the SHIMMUTA Games.
The match itself showcased NEMC’s sharp form. Forward Fortinatus Patrick opened the scoring in the 15th minute through a well-taken penalty, later adding a second in the 33rd minute.
He completed his hat-trick seconds after the second-half whistle to stretch the lead further. Midfielder Ismail Jemba struck in the 51st minute, before Emmanuel Mlungwana sealed the 5–0 result with a long-range effort in the 62nd minute.
But for NEMC, these athletic achievements complement a broader mission. By integrating environmental messages into a popular national workers’ sports festival, the Council aims to inspire collective action beyond stadiums encouraging citizens to adopt safer practices, protect ecosystems and understand Tanzania’s climate vulnerabilities.
The NEMC delegation remains in Morogoro for the SHIMMUTA 2025 Games, continuing its strategy of pairing competitive performance with environmental advocacy, ensuring that sport becomes a catalyst for national transformation.
