The National Environmental Management Council (NEMC) today held a high-level meeting with former Vice President Dr. Philip Isdor Mpango at his residence in Mayamaya, Dodoma, focusing on strategies to safeguard Tanzania’s environment.
During the discussion, Dr. Mpango raised serious concerns over the rapid environmental degradation across the country.
He stressed the urgent need to strengthen the protection of conservation areas and promote responsible land use.
“Many protected areas are under threat, rivers are being diverted unlawfully, and hydroelectric dams face damage due to human activities. Deforestation driven by timber and charcoal trade is accelerating environmental loss,” Dr. Mpango said.
He also highlighted challenges such as unregulated livestock grazing, reckless farming, and invasive plant species, calling for strong national strategies to address them.
He urged NEMC to be empowered fully in enforcing environmental laws, stating: “NEMC’s voice should no longer be sidelined.”
Dr. Mpango further encouraged the government and communities to implement the “Greening the Environment” initiative, proposing the development of green parks and botanical gardens in major towns and cities to promote healthier and eco-friendly urban spaces.
“As a nation, we must ask ourselves: what steps have we taken to protect and restore our natural environment? A greener, healthier Tanzania is achievable if we follow our laws and plans,” he added.
NEMC Director General, Dr. Immaculate Sware Semesi, commended Dr. Mpango’s vision and assured that his advice would guide ongoing efforts to enhance environmental protection and sustainable management in the country.
The visit reinforces collaboration between government institutions and experienced leaders, ensuring Tanzania continues to be a country with clean, safe, and sustainable environments.
