Deputy Minister for Energy, Salome Makamba, on 26 November 2025 conducted an inspection tour of the Mtera Hydropower Plant located between Iringa and Dodoma regions, expressing satisfaction with the plant’s improved generation capacity following major upgrades.
Speaking after the inspection, Ms. Makamba said recent rehabilitation works at the facility have significantly improved efficiency and strengthened electricity reliability, especially for communities in the two regions.
“After these upgrades, the turbines are performing well and guaranteeing sufficient power generation. Residents of Dodoma, Iringa and neighbouring areas are now enjoying more stable electricity,” she said.
The Deputy Minister noted that the improvements are part of continued government investments under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan to ensure consistent and sustainable access to electricity nationwide.
“Over TSh 10 billion has been invested to rehabilitate and modernise the two generating units here at Mtera. This progress demonstrates the President’s commitment to resolving public challenges and strengthening the energy sector,” she added.
TANESCO’s Deputy Managing Director for Distribution, Engineer Athanasius Nangali, said the Mtera plant is currently operating at optimal efficiency, producing its maximum capacity of 80 megawatts.
“This level of generation is contributing significantly to the stability of the national grid,” he said.
He added that safeguarding infrastructure and water sources is a shared responsibility among the Government, TANESCO, and surrounding communities, noting that destruction of infrastructure often leads to power disruptions.
“As a utility, we continue to encourage the public to protect electricity infrastructure and water sources to enable TANESCO to provide reliable, safe and efficient services,” Eng. Nangali stressed.
