Kigamboni residents have been assured of improved and reliable electricity services following an inspection visit by the Minister of Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, to the Dege Electricity Substation.
The visit comes as part of urgent efforts to address ongoing power challenges in the district and boost electricity supply for households and businesses.
During the tour, Minister Ndejembi directed TANESCO to take immediate steps to improve electricity access in Kigamboni.
“Today, we came to see how TANESCO can solve these challenges quickly. They have also put in place long-term plans, including expanding the Dege Substation with a new 120 MVA transformer, to ensure reliable electricity supply,” he said.
To tackle immediate power shortages, TANESCO is constructing a new line to transfer 22 megawatts from Mbagala to Kigamboni.
This move will enhance electricity availability and ensure residents can enjoy uninterrupted power.
“With urgent measures, TANESCO has assured me that a 22-megawatt line will be brought from Mbagala to Kigamboni to improve electricity services for the community,” Minister Ndejembi added.
In addition, TANESCO has installed 93 transformers to address low-voltage issues and is in the process of setting up 50 more.
These measures, expected to be completed by March 2026, are designed to significantly reduce power outages across Kigamboni.
Kigamboni District Commissioner, Mikaya Dalmia, welcomed the Minister’s visit and pledged full cooperation with TANESCO.
“I sincerely thank the Minister for this visit that brings real solutions to our district. We will continue to work closely with TANESCO to serve residents and urge the community to remain patient as these improvements take effect,” he said.
TANESCO’s Deputy CEO for Power Distribution, Mr. Athanasius Nangali, assured that the company will act promptly on the Minister’s directives.
“We will implement today’s instructions immediately, including installing transformers and bringing 22 megawatts from neighboring areas to Kigamboni to strengthen electricity supply,” he said.
The visit also focused on monitoring the expansion of the Dege Substation, which is now 60% complete.
Once finished, the substation will provide sufficient electricity to support Kigamboni’s growing economic and social activities, ensuring the district keeps pace with the city’s development.
