The Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr. Ashatu Kijaji (MP), has urged the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) to ensure that wildlife conservation efforts go hand in hand with the safety and well-being of communities living around national parks.
Speaking during a strategic meeting with TANAPA management in Arusha, Dr. Kijaji emphasized that protecting wildlife is not just about preserving nature it is also about supporting the people whose lives and livelihoods are closely linked to the parks.
“Every decision, from patrolling officers to senior management, must respect human dignity, follow the law, and maintain professionalism. We must create safe and motivating working environments for rangers while maintaining strong communication with communities around the parks. They are our first and most important partners in conservation,” she said.
The Minister also called on TANAPA to modernize its anti-poaching efforts by strengthening patrols, using accurate intelligence, drones, and monitoring technologies like GPS collars.
These steps are aimed at fighting poaching, illegal wildlife trade, and encroachment in protected areas.
Dr. Kijaji highlighted the importance of boosting tourism to meet the national goal of attracting eight million visitors.
She urged TANAPA to enhance existing tourist attractions, improve infrastructure, and develop new tourism products, particularly in newly protected areas.
“We must support President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s vision, who has opened doors through initiatives like the Royal Tour. By focusing efforts in the Southern, Western, and Eastern regions, we can increase tourism revenues while protecting our natural heritage,” she concluded.
