Gym trainers urged to apply skills to improve public fitness services

Gym and physical fitness trainers have been urged to put into practice the knowledge they gained during a week-long training programme aimed at strengthening the quality of fitness services in Tanzania.

Speaking on November 29, 2025, during the closing ceremony at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium hall, Senior Sports Officer from the National Sports Council (BMT), Charles Maguzu, said the training was designed to ensure that qualified trainers can effectively support Tanzanians in achieving better health, strength, and wellness.

Maguzu reminded the participants that their new certificates should reflect real change once they return to their workplaces.

“Use what you have learned in the field. This is how you show the value of your certificate,” he said.

He further stressed the importance of safety and professionalism, noting that trainers must understand a client’s medical and fitness background before designing an exercise programme.

“You must know a person’s history and health condition before giving any exercise. This helps you guide them according to their ability and prevents unnecessary risks,” Maguzu added.

Maguzu encouraged the graduates to form an interim leadership for a national association of gym and fitness trainers and to register it formally.

He noted that BMT is ready to support them through the registration process. He also urged them to establish well-registered fitness centres and clubs in regions across the country.

Meanwhile, training coordinator Salum Mtumbuka said 29 participants from different parts of Tanzania completed the Gym and Physical Fitness Training Programme.

Mtumbuka explained that the goal of the programme was to strengthen trainers’ capacity so they can offer services that follow sports science, national laws, and global standards.

“Our intention is to connect them with recognised sports associations under the National Sports Council, which is responsible for guiding and nurturing sports bodies,” he said.

He added that the long-term plan is to bring trainers together and support the formation of an official association that will promote unity and professionalism within the fitness industry.

Mtumbuka also revealed that the government is developing a Centre of Excellence for Talent Development at Malya College, which will soon begin talent-scouting clinics for young athletes in various regions.

“We thank President Samia Suluhu Hassan for allocating TZS 31 billion for the construction of this centre,” he said.

The new centre will include both primary and secondary schools to allow young talents to pursue their education while training professionally.
