The Boxing Federation of Tanzania (BFT) has called on President Samia Suluhu Hassan to continue extending support to the sport especially amateur boxing as the national team prepares for the 2024 World Boxing Championships in Dubai.
The men’s national team is scheduled to compete in the global tournament from December 1–15 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a stage BFT says could transform the careers of Tanzania’s top boxers.
BFT Parmanent Secretary Makore Mashaga said government support remains vital due to the magnitude of the event and the opportunities it presents for national athletes during and after their competitive years.
Mashaga outlined the team’s financial and logistical needs, including return air tickets, visas, accommodation, meals and allowances for an 18-person delegation comprising 13 boxers and five officials.
“We remain grateful for the support extended through the President’s office whenever we participate in international events,” Mashaga said.
“However, we once again request Her Excellency to continue uplifting this sport so others can appreciate the value of supporting our journey to Dubai.”he added
He noted that the championship offers significant rewards, with the gold medalist earning USD 300,000—a prize he said greatly motivates the athletes to push beyond their limits.
Mashaga said all participation requirements have been completed and that BFT has opened its doors to stakeholders and partners willing to support the team’s remaining needs.
On preparations, he explained that the boxers are currently training in a non-residential camp, with sessions conducted every morning and evening.
The federation is working to secure sponsorship for a fully residential camp that would enable intensive training—including late-night sessions—during the final week before the team departs for Dubai.
