Tanzania’s national women’s football team, Twiga Stars, will be in action tomorrow against Ethiopia in a decisive qualifier for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON)

The match will kick off at 5:00 p.m. at the Azam Complex Stadium in Chamazi, Dar es Salaam.

The qualifier marks a crucial step toward securing a spot in the continental finals scheduled to take place in Morocco, where Africa’s top women’s teams will compete for the championship title.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, Twiga Stars head coach Bakari Shime expressed confidence in his squad’s readiness, noting that preparations have gone smoothly.

“Our preparations are complete, and the players are in high spirits,” said Shime. “Everyone is fit and available except for Winfrida Gerald, who will miss the match due to suspension. It’s an important game for us, and I’m confident the players will follow the tactical instructions to ensure victory at home.”

Shime added that all players, including those who play abroad, were expected to have reported to camp by Tuesday evening.

He urged fans to turn up in large numbers to cheer for the team, saying their support would make a big difference.

“We know Ethiopia is a strong side, but we are well-prepared. Playing at home gives us an advantage, and with the fans behind us, we believe we can make history,” he said.

Team captain Anastazia Katunzi shared similar optimism, saying the players were fully focused and determined to deliver a strong performance.

“This is a very important game for us,” said Katunzi. “We’ve trained hard and are ready to fight for our country. We promise to give our best and make Tanzanians proud.”

On the other hand, Ethiopia’s head coach, Yosef Gebrewold, said his side respects Twiga Stars but is equally prepared for the challenge.

“We know Twiga Stars are one of the best teams in the region, and they have passionate supporters,” said Gebrewold.

“We’ve prepared well and will play with discipline and determination to get a good result away from home.”he added

The return leg will be played in Addis Ababa, where the overall winner will advance to the next round of the WAFCON 2026 qualifiers.

The Twiga Stars are aiming to make their mark once again on the continental stage and secure their place among Africa’s elite women’s football teams.
