Tanzania joins global fight against cancer in October awareness drive

Tanzania has joined countries worldwide in observing October as a month dedicated to raising awareness about cancer, with a special focus on breast cancer, a leading cause of death among women globally.

The observance coincided with an international cancer conference in Dar es Salaam, which brought together health experts, doctors, researchers, and community health activists from across the world.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Joel Ndumbaro, President of the Tanzania Association of Oncology Specialists, said early detection remains key to successful treatment.

“The challenge is that many patients come to hospitals when the disease is already advanced. Cancer detected at stage one or two can be treated much more effectively,” he said.

Dr. Magreth Moshi, a Tanzanian oncology specialist, stressed the importance of investing in preventive education and early screening, particularly for women and children.

“If we start education early in schools and rural communities, we will build a generation that knows how to protect themselves and values regular health check-ups,” she said.

Dr. John Thomas, a cancer specialist from Kenya, highlighted the need for regional collaboration to reduce cancer-related deaths.

“East Africa faces similar health challenges. By working together on research and sharing resources, we can save thousands of lives,” he said.

While October focuses on breast cancer awareness, experts urge expanding education to other fast-growing cancers in Tanzania, including cervical and prostate cancers.

The drive underlines the importance of prevention, early diagnosis, and regional cooperation in the fight against a disease that continues to claim thousands of lives each year.
