The Tanzania Police Force has moved to clarify reports circulating on social media that politician Humphrey Polepole has been abducted, saying investigations are underway to establish the facts.
In a statement issued from Police Headquarters in Dodoma on Monday, the police said they had taken note of information spreading online and among Mr. Polepole’s relatives suggesting that he had been kidnapped.
“We have already started working on these reports to verify the truth,” the police spokesperson said.
The force also explained that Mr. Polepole had earlier been summoned by the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to provide clarification on allegations he made on social media.
According to the statement, he has not yet appeared to give his account as required by law.
The police urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information, assuring Tanzanians that they are following legal procedures and investigating all claims thoroughly.
The matter has sparked widespread debate on social platforms, with many Tanzanians expressing concern over Mr. Polepole’s safety and demanding clarity from the authorities.
