Norway’s support expands Tanzania’s energy, education, and green growth

Norway’s long-standing support is driving significant development in Tanzania, particularly in energy access, education, and green economy initiatives, officials say.

Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Minister, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, spoke on the sidelines of the 22nd Meeting of Foreign Ministers of African and Nordic Countries in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, on October 2–3, 2025.

He described Norway as a key partner in advancing Tanzania’s development agenda and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Since 2010, Norway has contributed over NOK 1.1 billion (about TZS 300 billion) to Tanzania, targeting rural energy, education, climate action, and forest management.

Minister Kombo highlighted that this support has expanded access to electricity in rural areas, empowered women engineers, and strengthened the country’s economy through strategic investments, including Equinor’s natural gas projects.

“Norway’s contribution has directly improved services and livelihoods, particularly in rural communities, while supporting sustainable economic growth,” Minister Kombo said.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide reaffirmed his country’s commitment to continue collaboration with Tanzania on clean energy, quality education, and investments that foster a green economy.

He emphasized that Norway’s engagement is based on long-term partnerships grounded in transparency, fairness, and sustainability.

Minister Kombo added that Tanzania will maintain its historical partnership with Norway while continuing to create a conducive environment for investment and development cooperation for the benefit of citizens of both countries.
