Zanzibar President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to transforming the clove industry into a stronger driver of inclusive growth, pledging continued investment in both agricultural productivity and social services.
Speaking in Mkoani, South Pemba, on Thursday, Dr. Mwinyi handed over land ownership certificates to clove farmers, saying the move aims to empower them, safeguard their rights, and improve production efficiency.
The event, held at the Umoja ni Nguvu Hall, brought together hundreds of farmers and local leaders from across the region.
“The clove sector represents more than just a cash crop it is part of our national identity and a foundation for our economic future,” said Dr. Mwinyi.
“By guaranteeing farmers 80 percent of the market price, we are ensuring that their hard work directly translates into better living standards and sustainable growth.”he added
He said the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar (SMZ) remains determined to promote value addition, strengthen cooperatives, and attract private investment to modernize the clove value chain.
Dr. Mwinyi added that reforms underway are designed to secure the crop’s long-term contribution to the Isles’ economy and the livelihoods of rural communities.
In a demonstration of the government’s wider development agenda, President Mwinyi also handed over a modern ambulance boat to serve residents of Panza and Makoongwe islands.
The vessel will improve access to emergency health services and ease transportation challenges for patients in remote areas. The handover ceremony took place at Mkoani Port.
Additionally, Dr. Mwinyi presented a vehicle to the Ministry of Lands and Housing Development to strengthen its field operations and improve monitoring of clove plantations across Pemba and Unguja.
He said these interventions reflect his administration’s broader vision of delivering equitable growth through strategic investments in key sectors including agriculture, health, and infrastructure.
“Our goal is to build a resilient economy that uplifts every Zanzibari,” Dr. Mwinyi said. “By empowering farmers, improving public services, and modernizing our institutions, we are laying the foundation for a prosperous and inclusive future.”
Clove farming remains Zanzibar’s most valuable export earner and a major source of income for thousands of households.
The government’s ongoing reforms from price incentives to infrastructure support are expected to further strengthen its role in driving economic transformation across the Isles.
