Government seeks stakeholders’ input on 25-year gas utilization plan

The Ministry of Energy has launched a national consultation on the National Gas Utilization Master Plan (NGUMP), a strategic blueprint for the use of natural gas in Tanzania over the next 25 years.

Deputy Permanent Secretary Dr. James Mataragio opened the stakeholders’ workshop, which brought together government officials, private sector representatives, and development partners, including the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The plan aims to define natural gas demand across industries, electricity generation, transport, and domestic use, while also exploring local and international market opportunities.

“NGUMP will provide a clear picture of gas needs in different sectors, allowing us to allocate resources efficiently and plan infrastructure development effectively,” Dr. Mataragio said.

He emphasized that the plan will support Tanzania’s 2050 Development Vision, as natural gas remains a key driver of economic growth, and will align with the Strategic Plan for Clean Cooking Energy and the 2015 National Energy Policy.

Engineer John Bura, a participant in the workshop, said the plan will boost domestic gas consumption and called on the government and financial institutions to fast-track credit facilities for investors, particularly local players, to expand gas access nationwide.

The consultation marks the next step after the Ministry and JICA completed the NGUMP draft under the capacity-building project aimed at improving gas utilization and production.
