Zanzibar is taking strategic steps to become East Africa’s center for building innovation, a move expected to accelerate economic growth and create opportunities for young professionals in the construction and design sectors.

President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, said on September 8, 2025, at the State House in Zanzibar, that building innovation is a critical sector for the islands’ rapidly expanding economy.

He made the remarks during a meeting with a team of innovators from the East African Building Innovation Institute, led by Engineer Mecky Tchawi.

Dr. Mwinyi announced plans to establish a dedicated academic hub for building innovation within universities and higher learning institutions.

The initiative aims to equip young innovators with modern skills to meet the growing demand for construction projects across Zanzibar and the region.

“We are committed to creating a strong foundation for building innovation, which will support economic growth and generate jobs for our youth,” he said.

The President also approved the Institute’s request for him to serve as its first indigenous patron since its founding in 1913.

He received a special certificate and a historical book documenting the Institute’s legacy.

Engineer Mecky Tchawi highlighted that the pace of construction in any country reflects its economic growth.

He said the planned academic hub in Zanzibar will produce highly skilled professionals in design and construction, positioning the islands as a model for building innovation in East Africa.
