Fertilizer subsidy program transforms farming in Kigoma

The government’s fertilizer subsidy program is transforming agriculture in Kigoma Region, enabling farmers to access fertilizers at affordable prices and significantly boost their crop yields.

The initiative, introduced under the leadership of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, is already showing tangible results for local communities.

Kasulu District Commissioner, Colonel Isaack Anthony, said the program has directly benefited farmers in his district, where agriculture is the main source of livelihood.

“Most of our residents are farmers. The subsidy program has made it easier for them to buy fertilizers, increase production, and improve food security,” he said.

The remarks came during a visit by the Tanzania Fertilizer Regulatory Authority (TFRA) Board and Management, who toured the region to promote soil testing and proper fertilizer use.

TFRA Board member Khadija Jabri encouraged farmers and investors to test their soil before applying fertilizers to ensure the right type and quantity is used for each crop.

Engineer Amon Daniel Ntimba, owner of an avocado farm that hosted the TFRA delegation, praised the government for the program.

“This initiative is a game-changer for agriculture. I will increase fertilizer use on my farm to boost productivity and meet market demand,” he said.

During the visit, the delegation also toured Kasulu Sugar Factory and Kibondo Green Farm in Kibondo District.

Farmers in the region said the subsidy program is helping them grow more food, improve income, and invest in modern farming practices.

The fertilizer subsidy program continues to play a key role in supporting Tanzania’s farmers, encouraging modern agricultural practices, and contributing to national food security.
