TZS 7.5 billion refurbishment extends life of MV Magogoni ferry

Under the leadership of President Damia Suluhu Hassan, the MV Magogoni ferry has undergone a TZS 7.5 billion (US$3 million) refurbishment, extending its service life to an estimated 30 years.

The vessel, which connects Kivukoni and Magogoni across the Indian Ocean, can now carry 2,000 passengers, 60 small vehicles, and cargo in a single trip.

With thousands of commuters depending on the crossing daily, the upgrade is expected to ease congestion and improve efficiency in Dar es Salaam’s transport system.

Data from marine engineers indicate the ferry will require major maintenance every three to five years to maintain safety and reliability. Authorities say such periodic works are more cost-effective than acquiring new vessels, which would require over TZS 30 billion.

By cutting waiting time and ensuring smoother movement, the MV Magogoni refurbishment demonstrates the government’s push to strengthen urban transport infrastructure under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s leadership.
