TRA turns to football to promote tax compliance

By The Respondent Reporter

The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has entered the world of football with the launch of TRA United Sports Club, a move aimed at combining sports and civic responsibility.

The announcement, made on September 19, 2025, follows an agreement with Tabora United, which will now compete in the Premier League under its new name.

Based in Tabora Region, TRA United is being positioned as a team for taxpayers and all Tanzanians. According to the authority, the club will serve as more than just a source of entertainment for football fans.

It will be used as a platform to encourage voluntary tax compliance, nurture youth talent, promote patriotism and create employment opportunities in the sports sector.

TRA said football’s popularity makes it a powerful tool for connecting with citizens and communicating important messages about the role of taxes in financing national development.

By investing in a football club, the authority is also embracing corporate social responsibility, joining other institutions in East Africa that use sports to engage with communities.

Citizens have been called upon to support the new team, with TRA emphasizing that it belongs to taxpayers and symbolizes unity and shared progress.

The authority believes TRA United will help strengthen public trust and demonstrate that compliance with taxes is directly linked to both economic growth and social development.

With the slogan “Our Tax, Our Development,” TRA United seeks to bridge the passion of football with the responsibility of building a prosperous Tanzania.
