The Tanzania-Zambia Transmission Interconnector (TAZA) project is rapidly reshaping electricity supply in southern Tanzania, with the 400-kilovolt (203 km) Tunduma–Sumbawanga line now over 79 percent complete.
TANESCO Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Lazaro Twange, says the project will strengthen power reliability and spur socio-economic growth in Iringa, Njombe, Mbeya, Songwe, and Rukwa regions.
During a visit to Songwe and Mbeya on September 18, 2025, Mr. Twange highlighted the impact the project will have on households, businesses, and local industries.
“Reliable electricity is no longer a dream for our communities. This project is a game-changer for regional development,” he said.
Mr. Twange urged contractors to accelerate work to meet scheduled deadlines, citing progress on the Tunduma–Sumbawanga line, where 171 of 497 towers have already been installed.
At the Malangali substation, one of five being developed under TAZA, he noted that completion stands at 36 percent and called for closer supervision of contractors to maintain momentum.
The CEO also praised President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for prioritizing investment in the power sector, noting that her administration’s support is critical to boosting Tanzania’s energy infrastructure and driving economic growth.
In addition to the Tunduma–Sumbawanga line, Mr. Twange inspected key facilities, including the Iganjo substation in Mbeya, Nkangamo substation in Songwe, the Songea–Tunduru substation, and Mtwara 1 and 2 gas power plants.
He reassured citizens that TANESCO is committed to completing projects efficiently and delivering consistent electricity to communities across the southern regions.
With TAZA nearing completion, southern Tanzania is poised to benefit from improved energy access, supporting industrial growth, creating jobs, and enhancing the quality of life for thousands of residents.
