The Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA) on Friday held a military-style ceremony in Morogoro to officially bid farewell to its retired Conservation Commissioner, Mabula Misungwi Nyanda, who concluded his long career in public service.
TAWA Board Chairperson, Retired Major General Hamis Semfuko, commended Nyanda for being the first commissioner to serve the authority for a lengthy tenure and retire while holding its highest leadership position.
“On behalf of the Board, I wish to extend our sincere congratulations and gratitude to Retired Commissioner Nyanda for his dedicated service to the conservation sector, particularly during his leadership at TAWA,” said Semfuko.
He outlined major milestones achieved under Nyanda’s tenure, including improved staff welfare, the development of infrastructure, and increased government revenues through initiatives such as electronic auctions for tourist hunting blocks and strategic investments in protected areas.
“Much of TAWA’s transformation, from system reforms to strengthening staff benefits, was realized under Commissioner Nyanda. Together with other leaders, he built TAWA into the strong institution it is today,” Semfuko noted, adding that Nyanda had enhanced integrity and institutional stability.
In his farewell remarks, Nyanda thanked the TAWA Board for its vision and management guidance, while commending staff for their professionalism and patriotism.
“Management and staff are the ones who turned plans into real achievements. Your commitment to safeguarding wildlife resources is commendable,” he said.
Representing the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, Bernard Mercelline, Director of Administration and Human Resources, praised Nyanda for his contribution, saying his work had elevated TAWA’s visibility.
“On behalf of the Ministry, I congratulate you for the good work you accomplished and thank you for your valuable service,” Mercelline said.
Acting Conservation Commissioner, Mlage Kabange, assured that the institution will build on the strong foundation set by Nyanda to deliver on its mandate.
The event, held at TAWA headquarters, concluded with a reception at Cate Hotel in Morogoro.
