Tanzania Athletics to nurture young talent ahead of 2028 Olympics

The Tanzania Athletics Association (RT) has announced a strategic plan to invest in track and field events for children and youth, aiming to develop athletes for the 2028 Olympic Games.

RT President Rogath Stephen told The Respondent Online that the initiative seeks to identify and groom athletes who can compete successfully at international events.

He noted that the sport currently faces a shortage of track and field athletes, with no qualifiers in most events, except six in the marathon category.

"We have already begun with the 'Nakimbia Trial' races. We have directed regional and district officials to organize competitions for children and young athletes, and this program will also involve parents," Stephen said.

He stressed that talent development must start at the grassroots level. "While we have top-level athletes, there is a gap at the foundational level. Our aim is to create opportunities for children and youth to compete and grow in athletics," he added.

Stephen said the ultimate goal is to produce a strong pool of athletes so that Tanzania can field more competitors in track and field events at the 2028 Olympics.

He also called on stakeholders and partners to support the sport, highlighting Tanzania’s proud history of performing well in international competitions.
