Tanzania’s national budget has expanded significantly under President Samia Suluhu Hassan, with consistent increases channelled into priority sectors such as agriculture, health, and education.
The government says the steady rise reflects a deliberate strategy to boost economic growth and improve the lives of ordinary citizens.
In the 2021/22 financial year, the budget rose to TSh 36.23 trillion (USD 15.10 billion), up from TSh 34.88 trillion (USD 14.53 billion) in 2020/21. This represented an increase of TSh 1.35 trillion, or 3.9 percent.
The extra allocation boosted economic drivers, with agriculture funding climbing from TSh 229.8 billion to TSh 294.2 billion, while the health budget grew from TSh 933 billion to TSh 1.2 trillion.
The momentum accelerated in 2022/23 when the budget jumped by TSh 5.25 trillion to reach TSh 41.48 trillion (USD 17.28 billion), a 14.5 percent rise.
Agriculture received a record TSh 751.1 billion, while health was allocated TSh 1.4 trillion.
In 2023/24, the budget increased to TSh 44.39 trillion (USD 18.50 billion), up by TSh 2.91 trillion or 7 percent.
Agriculture was allocated TSh 970.8 billion and health rose to TSh 1.6 trillion, further strengthening service delivery.
For the 2024/25 financial year, the budget crossed the TSh 50 trillion mark for the first time in Tanzania’s history, reaching TSh 50.29 trillion (USD 20.95 billion), an increase of 13.3 percent.
Agriculture was allocated TSh 1.248 trillion, while health rose to TSh 1.8 trillion.
Most recently, in 2025/26, the national budget grew to TSh 57.04 trillion (USD 23.77 billion), reflecting a 13.4 percent rise, equal to TSh 6.75 trillion.
The health budget was increased to TSh 2.0 trillion, while agriculture also received higher funding, though government figures contained slight discrepancies.
The steady rise in allocations demonstrates President Samia’s resolve to prioritise social and economic sectors that directly impact citizens’ welfare. The government maintains that these investments are designed to create jobs, strengthen food security, and ensure that every Tanzanian enjoys improved services and a better quality of life.
