The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended the parliamentary election in Fuoni Constituency, West B District, following the death of Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) candidate Abass Ali Mwinyi.
The suspension took effect on September 25, 2025, in accordance with Section 71(1) of the Elections Act No. 1 of 2024.
INEC confirmed that it received official notification of Mwinyi’s passing in a letter dated the same day from CCM’s Deputy Secretary General for Zanzibar.
In a statement, the Commission explained that a new date for the nomination of candidates will be announced through a notice in the Government Gazette.
Once fresh nominations are conducted, all parliamentary election procedures in Fuoni will begin afresh.
INEC also clarified that the nominations of other candidates who were already legally endorsed remain valid, unless any of them opts to withdraw.
However, the Commission stressed that no campaign activities for the Fuoni parliamentary seat will be permitted until CCM nominates a new candidate.
