The Tanzania Police Force has launched a government-backed amnesty for individuals in possession of illegal firearms.

Those who surrender their weapons between September 1 and October 31, 2025, will not face prosecution.

The notice, issued under the Firearms and Ammunition Control Act of 2015, as amended in 2023, was signed by the Minister for Home Affairs, Innocent Bashungwa. It is part of Tanzania’s efforts to curb the circulation of illegal small arms and light weapons.

Police said anyone who voluntarily hands over firearms can do so at any police station, government office at the ward or shehia level, or through local leaders during working hours.

Authorities warned that those who retain illegal firearms after the amnesty period will face arrest and prosecution.

“Anyone who fails to comply will face legal consequences, including arrest, prosecution, and the possibility of losing their firearm license,” the statement said.

The amnesty also covers relatives of deceased gun owners and private security companies that may have retained or transferred firearms illegally.

The Police urged all Tanzanians to take advantage of the initiative, stressing that illegal weapons contribute to crime and insecurity in communities.

Licensed gun owners were also reminded to follow all regulations, with violations leading to strict penalties, including revocation of firearm licenses.

The announcement aligns with international and regional efforts, including United Nations and African Union resolutions, to control illegal arms and promote peace and security.
