Morogoro – The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has caught two prominent hotels in Morogoro, PH Hotel and Igombe Hotel, allegedly involved in electricity theft.
The incident happened recently, after inspectors discovered tampered T2 meters that allowed them to consume power without paying.
The hotels are among 14 customers arrested this week during a nationwide crackdown led by TANESCO’s meter experts from headquarters, working jointly with the Morogoro North regional office.
The special inspection took place in the Msamvu area, where the two hotels operate, and the fraud was uncovered with the support of local government leaders from White House Street and the Police Force.
TANESCO has stressed that the operation is ongoing and warned that stern legal measures will be taken against anyone found sabotaging the power utility.
The corporation said such malpractice denies it critical revenue needed to sustain services and expand electricity access.
