The Isimila Stone Age Site in Iringa Region has earned international recognition after being named among the best heritage and research presentations at the International Council of Museums (ICOM 2025) conference held in Rome, Italy, from September 25 to 27.

The award underscores the outstanding value of Isimila, which is world-famous for its stone tools estimated to be more than 300,000 years old, dramatic natural pillars, and its rich history that connects civilizations across continents.

The Tanzanian presentation highlighted the link between Isimila and Ruaha National Park, which is also home to the Magda Natural Pillars, showing how cultural and natural heritage can be harmonized to strengthen tourism appeal.

Officials noted that the recognition provides Tanzania with an opportunity to showcase its heritage sites on the global stage, attracting both international researchers and cultural tourism enthusiasts.

The Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), which represented the country at the meeting, reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the site through collaboration, sustainable conservation, and community involvement.
