Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Albert Chalamila, visited Kawe Market yesterday, which was destroyed by fire during the night of September 15, 2025, to console traders who lost their goods.
He announced that the Kinondoni Municipal Council would provide TZS 100 million as immediate relief for affected traders.
RC Chalamila, conveying the condolences of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, assured traders that the government would rebuild the market promptly and to high standards, enabling business to resume without delay. Meanwhile, traders will be temporarily relocated to plots at NHC Tanganyika Perkas.
He also directed the creation of a detailed database of all market traders to ensure accurate records for any future emergencies.
Approximately 1,000 traders were affected by the Kawe Market fire, and RC Chalamila urged the council to disburse the relief funds on September 16, 2025.
Silvester Chidego, Secretary of Kawe Market Traders, thanked the government for its support, noting that the relief funds would be shared fairly among all affected traders.
An elder trader appealed to stakeholders to assist traders in rebuilding their businesses and warned that special prayers would be offered against those who looted goods during the blaze.
RC Chalamila also ordered the immediate formation of a committee to investigate the cause of the fire and take swift action.
