The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) has been awarded the prestigious Nestor Espenilla Jr. Financial Inclusion Innovation Award by the Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI), a global network of 84 member countries.
The award recognizes institutions that demonstrate exceptional innovation and leadership in expanding access to financial services and promoting inclusive growth.
Deputy Governor Sauda Msemo received the award on behalf of Governor Emmanuel Tutuba during the ongoing AFI Annual General Meeting in Swakopmund, Namibia. Ms. Msemo leads the Bank’s delegation representing Tanzania in AFI working groups and committees.
BoT’s achievements include the successful rollout of the Instant Payment System (TIPS), establishment of a fintech regulatory sandbox under the 2024 regulations, a robust citizen complaints system (SEMA and BoT), and the national QR code payment platform, TANQR.
In a related recognition, Ms. Nangi Massawe, Manager of BoT’s Financial Inclusion Department, received the AFI Technical Leadership Award for her technical expertise, knowledge-sharing, and training support to other AFI member countries.
These accolades underscore the Bank’s commitment under Governor Tutuba’s leadership to leverage technology in expanding financial access, improving efficiency, lowering costs, and empowering Tanzanians to actively participate in the country’s economic growth.
