Ambassador Liberata Mulamula, the African Union (AU) Special Envoy on Women, Peace, and Security, has represented the continent at a special session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
It was her first participation in the UNGA in this capacity, marking an important moment for Africa’s engagement on global efforts to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment.
The one-day high-level meeting, held on September 22, brought together leaders and representatives from all UN member states.
It focused on reviewing progress made 30 years after the historic Beijing Conference on Women, which set the foundation for the Beijing Platform for Action.
The session provided a platform to reflect on achievements, challenges, and renewed commitments to advancing women’s rights and participation across political, social, and economic spheres.
Ambassador Mulamula’s presence at the session reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to ensuring that the agenda on Women, Peace, and Security remains central to Africa’s development strategies, as well as its contribution to global dialogue on gender equality.
