Water Aid Tanzania has brought a major smile to students and teachers at Bashang Primary School in Wareta Ward, Hanang’ District, Manyara Region, by constructing 23 modern toilets for students, teachers, and people with special needs.

The project also installed rainwater harvesting systems to fight outbreak-prone diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea.

The NGO also inaugurated its Hanang’ branch office under Coordinator Upendo Mtambo to serve the local community more effectively.

CPA Anna Mzinga, resident director of Water Aid Tanzania, said the initiative aims to ensure sustainable access to water, proper sanitation, and improved hygiene.

She emphasized that clean facilities enhance health, dignity, and learning outcomes in the community.

“The 12-month project, launched in October 2024, has empowered community health workers from Wareta and Laghanga to promote proper sanitation and hygiene practices, including handwashing with running water and soap. It has reached 12,505 people so far,” she said.

The total project cost was USD 102,553, or TZS 262 million. Primary beneficiaries include 10,050 people, among them 759 teachers and thousands of students, who now enjoy safe water, sanitation, and handwashing facilities at school.

Acting Regional Administrative Secretary of Manyara, Ibrahim Mbogo, who attended the launch, praised Water Aid Tanzania for complementing government efforts.

“This is a strong example of work that aligns with government priorities and directly benefits our students and teachers,” he said.

Headteachers Yoha and Raphael confirmed the school has 796 students, all of whom are direct beneficiaries.

“We will maintain the 23 new toilets to ensure they serve the students for years to come,” Raphael said.

Denis Mkasa, representing The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said the nearly 200-year-old church contributed funds to support the toilet construction, demonstrating the power of community partnership.
