Tanzania’s tourism sector has become a major driver of economic growth, contributing TZS 11 trillion to the national GDP under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
The growth reflects deliberate promotion strategies, including the launch of the Royal Tour documentary, which expanded Tanzania’s visibility in international markets.
International arrivals surged by 132.1 percent, rising from 282,944 visitors in 2021 to 2,141,895 in 2024.
This growth demonstrates how strategic branding can reposition a country as a competitive destination.
Domestic tourism also recorded significant progress, with local travelers increasing by 307.9 percent from 990,931 to 3,218,352, showing rising awareness and participation of Tanzanians in their own tourism economy.
Revenue figures confirm the sector’s upward trajectory.
Foreign earnings expanded from USD 700 million (TZS 1.82 trillion) in 2021 to USD 3.9 billion (TZS 10.14 trillion) in 2024, an increase of TZS 8.32 trillion.
Domestic tourism income rose from TZS 46.3 billion to TZS 209.8 billion in the same period, reflecting the sector’s broader multiplier effects.
The trends highlight the dual impact of international and domestic tourism in diversifying revenue streams, stimulating service industries, and creating jobs.
Tourism is consolidating its role not only as a foreign exchange earner but also as a catalyst for inclusive growth within the national economy.
