Tanzania continued its impressive run in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) with a narrow but crucial 1-0 victory over Mauritania at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Tuesday, August 6.
The match was a tactical battle, with both sides showing strong defensive organization in the first half. Neither team managed to find the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes, going into the break deadlocked at 0-0.
In the second half, the pace of the game intensified as both teams searched for a breakthrough. Despite several close attempts, it wasn’t until the 89th minute that the deadlock was finally broken.
Tanzanian defender Shomary Kapombe stepped up as the hero of the night, scoring the decisive goal that sealed all three points for the home side.
The goal was enough to see Tanzania maintain their perfect start to the tournament, following their earlier 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso.
The Taifa Stars now sit at the top of their group with six points from two matches marking a historic achievement as the team reaches this milestone for the first time in CHAN history.
With one match remaining in the group stage, Tanzania is now in a strong position to qualify for the quarter-finals, bringing renewed optimism to the nation's football fans.
Elsewhere in the group, Burkina Faso bounced back from their opening loss by defeating the Central African Republic 4-2 at the same venue. The result places Burkina Faso second in the standings with three points.
The strong start by Tanzania in this year’s CHAN tournament not only boosts their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages but also reflects the growing maturity and determination within the squad under the current technical bench.
As the tournament unfolds, all eyes will be on the Taifa Stars as they aim to maintain their momentum and chase continental glory on home soil.
