Morogoro is experiencing a major boost in urban development through the Tanzania Cities Transforming Infrastructure and Competitiveness (TACTIC) project, which is improving roads and stormwater drainage systems across the municipality.
Morogoro Municipal Executive Director, Mr. Emmanuel Mkongo, said the project is nearing completion, with about 95 percent of the work done.
He emphasized that the initiative is addressing long-standing flooding problems while increasing property values in previously hard-to-reach areas.
“Some residential areas used to flood during the rainy season, creating serious inconveniences. Now, with the construction of drainage systems, water no longer stagnates. This has eliminated the problem and increased the value of plots and houses because accessibility has improved,” Mr. Mkongo said.
Residents have welcomed the project, pledging to protect the new infrastructure. Ms. Rose Munisi, who was affected by floods in the past, commended the government’s intervention.
“We are the custodians of this infrastructure and will not allow people to dump waste in the drains. Previously, we really suffered during the rainy season,” Ms. Munisi said.
In Kihonda Ward, the new road network is seen as a game-changer. Ward Executive Officer, Ms. Tatu Khamis, said the development is not only improving the area’s appearance but also linking it to the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station.
“This connection will boost economic opportunities for our residents and make transportation easier,” she said.
Mr. Mohamed Ramadhani from Tungi neighborhood echoed the positive impact, recalling the hardships people faced before the upgrades.
“Before these improvements, taking children to school or reaching hospitals was a big challenge during the rainy season. Now we can work and travel with ease thanks to these roads,” Mr. Ramadhani said.
The TACTIC project, once fully completed, is expected to bring lasting solutions to infrastructure challenges in Morogoro and stimulate economic growth for communities.
