New NEMC board sets fresh tone for accountability and clean environment

The newly appointed Board of Directors of the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) has held its first meeting with the Council’s staff, aiming to strengthen accountability, teamwork, and effective service delivery.

The meeting took place during NEMC’s monthly staff session in Dar es Salaam. Board Chairperson, Engineer Mwanasha Tumbo, led the delegation of seven board members and used the platform to encourage staff to lead by example in promoting integrity, environmental cleanliness, and results-oriented performance.

She said the first step in protecting the environment begins with individual responsibility. “If we want to serve the public effectively, we must first be clean, honest, open, and supportive of one another within our institution,” she said.

Eng. Tumbo emphasized that good environmental habits start at home and grow through the community. She added that the board will promote transparency, cooperation with management, and a better working environment for all employees.

“If there are challenges, speak up. Let us build a culture of openness and care. That is how success begins,” she said.

NEMC’s Director General, Dr. Immaculate Sware Semesi, officially welcomed the new board and said the management and staff are ready to support its leadership and work together to achieve NEMC’s national goals.

“We are committed to working closely with you. Our focus remains on protecting the environment through strong partnerships and improved performance,” Dr. Semesi said.

NEMC staff expressed optimism following the meeting. They said the board’s early interaction with staff shows a willingness to engage and build strong relationships with those working on the ground.

The new board is expected to steer the Council in a fresh strategic direction. This comes at a time when the country faces growing environmental challenges, including climate change, pollution, and waste management.

The board’s visit signals a renewed commitment to improving internal performance and promoting a cleaner and healthier environment for all Tanzanians.
