Patrick Mwalunenge, the ruling CCM candidate for Mbeya Urban constituency, has pledged to transform the health sector by positioning Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital (MZRH) as a regional center for medical tourism.
He said the facility would attract patients from Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries, generating foreign exchange through specialized treatment services.
“The government has made significant investments in MZRH, including establishing the Meta maternal and child health unit. My plan is to leverage these resources to serve not only Tanzanians but also neighboring countries, making healthcare part of the tourism industry,” Mwalunenge said earlier this week after collecting his nomination forms from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He also promised to accelerate economic growth in Mbeya Urban, which he described as a gateway to Southern Africa, through strategic development initiatives.
“We will improve the agriculture sector, which is the backbone of our economy, and create more jobs for young people. Groups such as motorcycle riders, food vendors, and small traders will be fully supported,” he added.
Mwalunenge urged residents to maintain peace and unity, saying these are essential for sustainable development in the constituency and beyond.
